The title "La Forge" is French for "the forge," but the Bain News Service attached it to this negative without verification, so the subject may be a place, a person, or a workshop of some kind. The image survives as a 5 by 7 inch or smaller glass negative, a format that news photographers used widely in the early twentieth century before flexible film became standard. George Grantham Bain's agency, based in New York, supplied pictures of current events, personalities, and everyday scenes to newspapers and magazines. Its negatives are valuable for showing how photojournalism worked in that period, even when, as here, the record leaves the specific subject open.
