Chester A. Arthur sat for this 1882 portrait while serving as the 21st President of the United States, a post he had held since the assassination of James A. Garfield in September 1881. The print was made by the Washington studio of Christian Schussele's associate... no, correction: the record credits C.M. Bell, the Washington photographer known for official portraits of the period. Arthur's presidency, which ended in 1885, is often remembered for civil service reform, a subject worth keeping in mind when viewing his composed, formal expression.
