The chamber shown here is where the justices heard cases in the Capitol, a room the Court shared with the Senate's old meeting space and occupied from 1860 until it moved into its own building in 1935. The print is a photoprint credited to C.M. Bell, a Washington photographer who recorded government buildings and officials in the late nineteenth century. Its date of about 1888 comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, but it places the image in an era when the Court was still working in cramped Capitol quarters. Look at the arrangement of the bench, counsel tables and gallery to see how the justices' room was set up before the Court had a home of its own.
