Children from Rochester's out-of-door school are shown coasting down a snowy slope on a toboggan, a scene that would have been unusual in a classroom of the period. Open-air schools took shape in the early 1900s, when many American cities, Rochester among them, held classes outdoors or in unheated, airy rooms to protect children, especially those thought to be at risk of tuberculosis, from indoor illness. Winter was the hardest test of that idea, so pictures like this one, made for the Bain News Service, show the approach as much as the play. The photograph's caption and its place in the Bain collection suggest it was meant to publicize the schools' health benefits.
