Children's shoes left outside a Japanese school form the subject of this c1904 stereograph, a detail that reflects the custom of removing footwear before entering indoor spaces. The card was copyrighted by B.L. Singley and issued by the Keystone View Company, which produced large numbers of stereo views for home viewers in the early twentieth century. Viewed through a stereoscope, such cards gave American audiences a glimpse of daily life abroad, though the caption information accompanying this record has not been independently verified.
