Schoolchildren pour out of a doorway in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Brazil's Minas Gerais state, in this 1941 photographic print. The record places it within the Archive of Hispanic Culture, a collection the Library of Congress built to document Latin American life during the 1940s, when Washington was expanding its cultural ties across the hemisphere. Belo Horizonte was a planned city, laid out in the 1890s as the state's new capital, and its schools were part of a broader push to educate a growing urban population. The scene of children leaving class gives a quick, unposed view of everyday city life at the time.
