Mary Texanna Loomis sits among the equipment of her own radio school, a rare image of a woman running a technical training business in the early years of commercial broadcasting. Loomis founded the Loomis Radio School in Washington, D.C., and was known as one of the first women to train operators in wireless telegraphy and radio, a field that was then dominated by men. The photograph was made by Underwood & Underwood, a large studio that supplied news and portrait pictures to newspapers around 1921, when amateur and commercial radio was expanding rapidly across the country.
