Fritz Kreisler, the Austrian-born violinist, is the subject named in this glass negative, which came out of the Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures from about 1900 to the early 1920s. Kreisler was one of the most celebrated concert violinists of that era, touring the United States often and drawing large audiences with his polished tone and his short, sweetly melodic pieces. The record offers no date and the title comes from the agency's own unverified notes, so the exact occasion is unknown. Bain's files are worth noticing for their sheer scale, since they capture performers, politicians and ordinary street life in a documentary style.
