Merry-Go-Round for the White House" casts the 1876 race as a carousel, with party men circling the executive mansion as if it were a prize on a ride. The Daily Graphic, a New York illustrated paper, ran it as a wood engraving on its cover on May 19, 1876, weeks before the Republican and Democratic conventions picked their nominees. The record names Rutherford B. Hayes, Thomas Hendricks, William Eaton Chandler, and Francis Cockrell, figures who were all contending for influence in that contest. The cartoon captures the uncertainty of a spring when no one yet knew who would ride away with the White House.
