The only identification for this portrait is the name Comdr. J.H. Klein, which the National Photo Company recorded on the negative sleeve as unverified data. The company worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, when portraits of officers were a regular part of its output. The glass shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, not from the sitter or the studio's work. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
