This glass negative is labeled "Chas. G. Abbott" and dated November 9, 1922, though the record notes that the title came from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been verified, so the identity of the sitter or subject is uncertain. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, producing large numbers of portraits and pictures of people and events in the city. Its glass plates were donated to the Library of Congress, and this one came in as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Visible streaks and blemishes are typical of the natural breakdown of the original emulsion coatings on old glass plates.
