Drilling in the loose trousers, short jackets, and fez-style caps of the French Zouave regiments from North Africa, the Zouave Cadets of Chicago show how far that fashion had traveled by 1860. Elmer Ellsworth's Zouave drill team, which toured the Northern states that year, had set off a craze for these companies, and militia units like this one adopted the dress for their showy exercises. The wood engraving ran in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on July 28, 1860, a reminder of how common such drill companies were in the years before the Civil War.
