The National Photo Company's title for this view, Al Koran, points to the Al Koran Temple, a Shriners fraternal lodge in Cleveland. The Shriners, an organization affiliated with Freemasonry, took names with Near Eastern echoes for their temples, and this one carries that tradition. The company photographed American cities on glass negatives in the early twentieth century, and this example is dated to about 1923 from negatives in the same range. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration in its original coating, not from the scene itself.
