A freighter named ERIK and a line of lumber barges fill the foreground of this view of Riga, Latvia, which makes the scene a record of the port at work. Before 1918, Riga sat on the Daugava River near the Gulf of Riga and was one of the Russian Empire's busiest Baltic harbors, with timber among its major exports. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, an early twentieth-century news picture archive, so it reads as documentation of commerce. The caption details were transcribed from old cards and may not be fully verified, but the shipping and timber trade are clearly visible.
