Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863, was the Confederate assault across open fields toward the Union center on Cemetery Ridge, and this picture shows a mounted Confederate officer on a gray horse riding through drifting powder smoke with infantry around him. The attack, ordered by Robert E. Lee after a massive artillery bombardment failed to break the Union line, ended in heavy casualties within about an hour. Images like this one were often staged or composed later, so it is worth reading the rider as a symbol of the charge as much as a record of a single moment on the field.
