Charles and Ray Eames are shown looking over a prototype chair from their Aluminum Group, the line of cast-aluminum seating they developed in the mid-1950s and put into production in 1958. The photograph dates to 1957, when the pair were refining the design in their Venice, California studio, testing how the metal frame and the molded seat would hold up in real use. The Aluminum Group was a notable break from the couple's earlier plywood work, using a lightweight, weather-resistant material to make chairs that were both sculptural and practical. Images like this one show the hands-on, collaborative process behind a design that became a mid-century classic.
