Few terms from the Civil War carry as much history as "contraband," the word Union officers adopted in 1861 for enslaved people who reached army lines. This stereograph shows such a group, and its record ties it to the Brady studio, with the print issued by the War Photograph & Exhibition Company of Hartford, Connecticut, as number 2594 in its series. Stereo cards like this were viewed in pairs through a hand viewer, bringing images of the war into parlors. The sitters are not named in the record, so the card is best read as a document of how the war upended Black lives and how northern audiences were shown that upheaval.
