Signal flags set this poster apart from other wartime recruiting images: a Marine works them in the foreground, pointing to the Corps' role at sea and in signaling duties. J.C. Leyendecker, best known in those years for his magazine covers and advertising illustrations, produced the design in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War. The Marine Corps needed to expand quickly during the conflict, and posters like this one were part of a broad effort to draw young men into its ranks. The lithograph's bold color and clean, idealized figure reflect the commercial illustration style Leyendecker helped popularize.
