Valentine's Day cards were a booming commercial business by the late 1800s, and this gallery's valentines show how the custom moved from handwritten notes to printed, decorated sheets. Many of the earliest examples used lace paper, embossed scraps, and sentimental verse, and some were sent anonymously or with teasing lines. Manufacturers in the United States and Britain produced them in huge numbers, often for the mail, so the designs reflect both romantic ideals and the tastes of the period. Looking closely at the ornament and wording reveals a good deal about how people of the time expressed affection.
