Valentine cards of the late 1800s and early 1900s were often printed with embossed lace, paper fringe, and bright chromolithographed flowers, and they were exchanged in a way that made the holiday a social ritual as much as a romantic one. Mass-produced cards became popular in the United States after the Civil War, when cheaper color printing let manufacturers sell sentimental designs to shops and households. Many people wrote anonymous verses or sent cards without signing them, so the small printed message often said more than the sender dared to. Look closely at the decoration, since the layered paper and hand-finished details show how much labor went into a card that might be tossed away after a single day.
