Valentine's Day cards have a long, lively history in the United States, and this gallery's valentines show how the custom changed over time. Mass-produced cards took off in the mid-1800s, when printers began offering lace-edged sheets, embossed hearts and sentimental verses that let people send affection without writing a full letter. Many of these early designs were printed in bright colors and layered with paper cutwork, reflecting the period's fondness for ornament. Looking closely at the decoration and wording can tell you a good deal about the courtship customs and fashions of the era.
