Valentines from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were often die-cut, embossed paper cards decorated with lace, ribbon, and paper flowers, and they were exchanged long before the holiday became a commercial staple. Many were printed by American and British firms that sold them by the hundred, so the same sentimental motifs of cupids, hearts, and doves turn up again and again. Sending one was a small, sometimes anonymous way to express affection or to tease, and the cards that survive show how much of that courtship language was carried on paper.
