Valentine cards of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century were often elaborate objects, built with lace paper, embossed scraps, pressed flowers and tiny mirrors, and they were sent more often than they were kept as art. The sentimental imagery on them, with cupids, doves and hearts tied in ribbon, reflected a boom in commercial greeting cards in the United States and Britain, when mass printing made a card affordable for almost anyone. Many of these designs also carried coded messages, as the flower or color on a card could stand for a feeling a writer found too bold to say aloud.
