Few objects capture the 1860 campaign as compactly as this three-quarter-inch badge, which pairs Abraham Lincoln on one side with his running mate, Hannibal Hamlin, on the other. Hamlin, a former U.S. senator from Maine, was the Republican vice presidential nominee, and the two portraits were meant to be worn together as a single political statement. The record credits Mathew Brady, the New York and Washington portrait photographer, with the image, which survives as a tintype, a process that produced a direct positive on a thin metal plate. Its small wire fastener shows how such badges were pinned to clothing during the election.
