Two tiny portraits share a single button here, with Abraham Lincoln on one face and Hannibal Hamlin on the other, so a wearer could display the entire Republican ticket at once. Hamlin, a former senator from Maine, was Lincoln's running mate in the 1860 election, which Lincoln won. Small photographic badges like this, with the portraits set in metal and fastened with a wire loop, were a new kind of campaign souvenir, and they show how quickly photography was being put to political use. The photographer credited on the record, Mathew B. Brady, ran a well-known portrait studio and made many images of the period's public figures.
