Barely three-quarters of an inch across, this tintype shows a campaign button with Abraham Lincoln on one face and Hannibal Hamlin on the other. Hamlin, a former senator from Maine, was Lincoln's running mate on the 1860 Republican ticket, and the pairing let supporters wear both candidates on one small piece. The photographer, Mathew Brady, was best known for his portraits of Lincoln and his Civil War photography, and the tintype process was inexpensive and durable, well suited to campaign keepsakes. The metal wire fastener on the back shows the button was meant to be pinned to a coat.
