A benefit party with barter, held in 1939 at the Coca-Cola plant in Rockville center on Long Island, is the particular subject of this poster. Its purpose was to raise money for a scholarship fund for art teachers in Nassau County. Southside High School sponsored the notice, and the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, lent its name and its silkscreen process. That technique let the project's poster unit make inexpensive, bold color prints for community events. The playing-card motif hints at the games and trading that filled the evening, and the date stamped on the back, July 18, 1939, fixes the poster to that summer.
