Few charity posters of the period paired a plea for donations with a stage show, but this one does both: it asks New Yorkers to give to the needy and join the mayor's welfare milk fund, and it advertises a "monster vaudeville show" to draw the crowd. The silkscreen was produced under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which made many public-information posters in the mid-1930s for city services and relief drives. The record dates it to 1936, and a stamp on the back reading "Feb 2 1939" shows it was still being handled or filed a few years later, when feeding families was a pressing relief concern in New York.
