The name on this glass negative, Jack Britton, points to one of the best-known welterweights of the 1910s, a boxer who fought often in American rings during the years when prizefighting drew large crowds and newspaper attention. The Bain News Service, the photo agency whose work fills this group of negatives, sent photographers to such events and to the people who fought in them, so the picture likely reflects that busy trade. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the agency recorded itself, which has not been independently verified. Still, the glass plate format points to the early twentieth century, when agency photographers relied on it for sharp, fast work.
