Titled *The Stride of a Century*, this Currier & Ives lithograph uses Brother Jonathan, the early personification of the United States, to mark the nation's hundredth birthday. Published in New York around 1876, it belongs to the wave of popular prints that marked the Centennial Exhibition, which opened that year in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, to celebrate a century since the Declaration of Independence. Currier & Ives sold images like this cheaply to a broad public, so the print shows how commercial lithography turned a national anniversary into everyday imagery.
