This 1873 view shows Boston a little more than a year after the Great Fire of November 1872 destroyed much of the downtown district. Bird's eye maps like this one were popular in the 1870s and 1880s, when lithographers drew cities as if seen from a high vantage point, so streets, rooftops, wharves and church spires could be read at a glance. Boston's Back Bay was also being filled with new land during these years, a change that reshaped the city's edge. The map is useful for seeing how the city looked just before its rebuilding and expansion.
