This small sheet, about 18 by 25 centimeters, shows a pass in the Rocky Mountains, rendered in graphite, ink, watercolor and crayon and signed with the initials "DAJ" and the date 1859. The year matters: 1859 was the height of the rush to the Colorado gold fields near Pikes Peak, when thousands of emigrants crossed the plains and mountains by routes such as the Cherokee Trail. Its subject links the drawing to the broader gold rush era that also drew people west to California. The combination of quick pencil, ink and wash suggests a traveler or observer recording the terrain firsthand.
