Herbert K. Betts, a performer who died in 1931, is the name this lithograph was built to sell, which sets it apart from many images of cowboys from the same period. Printed around 1905 by the U.S. Lithograph Co. in Cincinnati and New York, it belongs to the Russell-Morgan line of theatrical posters, which were produced in quantity for touring companies and reused across many towns. The cowboy and military figures reflect the appetite for Western melodrama in the early 1900s, when audiences paid to see frontier stories set in Arizona and beyond. The bold color and stacked lettering show how such posters had to catch the eye of passersby on busy streets.
