This drawing shows a covered wagon at a river ford on the North Platte, in what is now Wyoming. Dated 1859, it comes from the years when emigrants heading to California's gold fields and to Oregon regularly crossed rivers like this one on the overland trails. The artist signed the sketch "DAJ" on the wagon itself, a small detail that points to a personal record made on the road. Graphite and ink drawings like this one help historians see the everyday work of the crossing, including the animals, the wagon, and the water.
