A small boy stands beside a camera far too large for him, and the picture plays on that mismatch of child and machine. The record gives no date, and its subject tags are unverified, so the exact moment and maker are unknown. Still, the tracing "Children & photog." points to a common early-twentieth-century theme: photography was becoming a hobby and a novelty, and studio portraits and staged scenes often cast children as playful stand-ins for the adult craft. Photographs like this one tell us as much about how people pictured childhood and technology as about the boy himself.
