Among the Library's Bellows lithographs, this small version of *Electrocution* shows an execution in stark black and white, with the chair and onlookers reduced to a few hard masses. George Bellows made the image in 1917, drawing on his observation of an electrocution at Sing Sing prison in Ossining, New York, where the state had used the electric chair since 1890. The print is signed in pencil, and Bellows's restraint is worth noticing: he shows little of the condemned man, letting the setting and the silent witnesses carry the weight of the scene.
