The Battle of the Brandywine was fought on September 11, 1777, near Chadds Ford in southeastern Pennsylvania, when British forces under Sir William Howe outflanked the Continental Army led by George Washington and pushed it back toward Philadelphia. This halftone reproduction belongs to a long tradition of prints that revisited the engagement for popular audiences, often well after the fighting ended. The caption card records no date, so the print's exact making is uncertain, but halftone printing became common in the late nineteenth century, when such illustrations were widely reproduced in books and periodicals.
