Hannibal, Missouri, a river town on the Mississippi, is the place this engraving names, and it is where Samuel Clemens spent his boyhood before he became Mark Twain. The town later served as the model for St. Petersburg in *The Adventures of Tom Sawyer* and for the Hannibal of *Adventures of Huckleberry Finn*, so many viewers know it through those books. The record does not name the engraver or give a date, but the pencil signature suggests the artist approved the impression. The print shows how a wood engraving could fix a real town in the public imagination, tying a specific place to a famous author's memory of childhood.
