This color poster is an advertisement for the September issue of *The Bookman*, a literary monthly that began publication in New York in 1895. Its bracketed "[for] Sept." in the title suggests it was printed to promote a single issue rather than the magazine in general. The 1890s saw a boom in colorful lithographic posters in American cities, and magazine publishers used them to catch the eye of readers on streets, in shops, and on station walls. Because the record does not name the artist, the design is best read as a typical example of the period's commercial poster work.
