A color lithograph advertising the April issue of *The Bookman*, a New York literary monthly launched in 1895, this poster was designed to catch the eye of magazine buyers at newsstands. Its artist, James Montgomery Flagg, was still a teenager when he made it around 1896, early in a career that would make him one of the best-known illustrators in the United States. The bold flat shapes and simplified lettering reflect the European poster craze of the 1890s, when advertising art became fashionable enough for collectors and magazine readers to prize.
