Catalogued simply as *The Circus*, this single print is dated about December 1881, though the record marks its details as unverified. The shelflist card names Pastime Publishing Co., the only publisher noted, so that attribution should be read with caution. In the early 1880s the American circus was at the height of its traveling era, with large tent shows moving by rail from town to town. Circus prints of this kind were often used to advertise such spectacles, and they still show how the shows were presented to the public.
