Women trapeze artists are the focus of this circus poster from about 1890, a period when female aerialists were becoming a popular draw in American circuses. The sheet was printed by the Calvert Lithograph Company of Detroit, a firm known for circus and theatrical bills, and its color was applied by hand, which gave the poster bright tones meant to catch the eye of passersby. The subject headings on women's clothing point to costumes of the day, which had to balance modesty with the freedom of movement that aerial work required.
