Rather than a three-ring tent, this poster advertises a gala puppet circus, with a lineup of clowns, cowboys, acrobats, animals, and novelty acts. It dates to 1936 and was sponsored by the Federal theater Project, the New Deal program that employed out-of-work actors, puppeteers, and stage crews during the Depression. Its bold flat colors come from silkscreen printing, a method the Works Progress Administration's poster units used widely, and today these posters document both the theater of the period and the graphic style of its advertising.
