Brooklyn anchors this woodcut, and its title, *Early morning*, sets the hour. Woodcut is a relief method in which the artist cuts away the areas meant to stay blank, so the raised surfaces take the ink. Its popularity in the United States during the 1930s reflected a broader revival of printmaking, when many artists turned to inexpensive, reproducible media. The print is signed in pencil, and it won the Mildred Boeroke Prize from the Print Club in 1942, which suggests it drew notice from its contemporaries. The Library of Congress acquired it by purchase through the Pennell fund.
