Washington's figure anchors this color lithograph, which gathers the military dress and flags of the Revolutionary War into a single display. Benjamin John Lossing, the historian and illustrator best known for his *Pictorial Field-Book of the Revolution*, supplied the design, and Thomas Sinclair of Philadelphia printed it around 1876. That was the centennial year of independence, when interest in the nation's founding and its military past ran high, and Philadelphia was the city where that anniversary was celebrated. Prints like this one helped Americans picture the uniforms and colors of the 1770s and 1780s at a time when few original examples survived.
