Flagpoles rise above a dense crowd of men spread across an open field at Gettysburg, a setting that points to a ceremony or commemoration rather than everyday activity. The gallery's Gettysburg Address grouping suggests the scene relates to the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery on November 19, 1863, where Abraham Lincoln delivered his brief address after a much longer oration by Edward Everett. Large outdoor gatherings like this one were common at the battlefield in the years after the fighting, when veterans, officials and visitors came to mark the dead. The photograph is worth a close look for the way the crowd fills the ground and how the flags organize the composition.
