A dense crowd fills an open field in this view, and the record places it among the Gettysburg Address pages, so it most likely reflects the gathering at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery on November 19, 1863. Several thousand people, including families of the fallen and officials, came to hear orator Edward Everett speak for about two hours, followed by Abraham Lincoln's brief address of just over two minutes. Lincoln's few paragraphs became one of the most quoted speeches in American history. Look at how far the crowd extends across the ground, since it shows how many people traveled to a town still recovering from the battle four months earlier.
