Currier & Ives drew on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1855 poem "The Song of Hiawatha" for this scene of the hero leaving his home, a subject that suited the firm's appetite for popular literary themes. Longfellow's epic, built on Ojibwe legends and a meter borrowed from the Finnish Kalevala, was a bestseller in the 1850s and 1860s, and printmakers quickly turned its episodes into sentimental pictures for middle-class parlors. The lithograph is one of the firm's many color prints from the 1860s, made in New York, when the company was turning out images at a steady pace for a wide audience.
