Although the title uses the modern name, the country was called Siam for most of the period this print dates from, between 1890 and 1923. It became Thailand only in 1939, so the label was applied later. The print comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled around the American travel writer Frank G. Carpenter, whose newspaper letters described distant places for American readers. The record gives no more specific location, so the image is best read as a view of Siam at the turn of the twentieth century, when King Chulalongkorn was modernizing the kingdom while keeping it independent of colonial rule.
