Dredges working in the Panama Canal make up the subject here, shown in a wide panoramic view that takes in the machinery and the excavated cut around it. The gallery files it under Theodore Roosevelt, who pushed the canal project forward after taking office in 1901 and who oversaw the decision to build it under American control. Dredges like these were central to the work: they scooped out mud and rock to deepen channels and clear the way for the locks and waterway, which was among the largest engineering undertakings of its era. A panoramic format helps show the scale of the labor and the raw landscape it reshaped.
